La Chanson

La Chanson translated from French is "The Song". This Chardonnay is made from a blend of excellent vineyards located primarily in Santa Barbara County. With an eye towards versatile food pairings, we source grapes for La Chanson that will produce a clean, fruit forward style. The result is a wine with firm acidity and a rich nucleus of traditional Chardonnay flavor.

2005 vintage tasting notes:
A blend of Chardonnay from vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley and Santa Rita Hills. Aromas of tropical fruit and honeysuckle are followed up with a nice balance of acidity and oak spice on the palate. The crisp yet easy finish highlights the food friendly nature of this wine.

2004 vintage tasting notes:
Sourced from Bien Nacido and Solomon Hills Vineyards. Opaque gold color with aromas of lemon-lime and mineral. Full bodied yet lean on the palate with flavors of tropical fruits and hints of vanilla nut spice. Finishes crisp but smooth.

Cuvée Juliet
Cuvée Juliet is made primarily from 31 year old Chardonnay vines on Bien Nacido’s Central Western section, known as “J” block. J-block’s soil consists of well-drained sandy loams that have cobbly clay loam subsoil; ideal for these old and steady Chardonnay vines. The Bien Nacido Vineyard was a pioneer to the Santa Maria Valley and is managed with great care by Bien Nacido’s cutting edge viticulture team led by Chris Hammel. This is truly an example of terroir in unity with farming.

2005 vintage tasting notes:
TBA -  release scheduled for fall  2007

2004 vintage tasting notes:
Golden-green color with a concentrated nose of lees, hazelnut & ripe tropical fruits. Round on the palate balanced with a clean acidity. Long and full finish.

Le Sélection Des Wayfarer
The Chardonnay vines known as “W” block on Bien Nacido’s North Eastern section are the foundation of Le Sélection Des Wayfarer. W-block’s soil is very different from its sister J-block (Cuvée Juliet) in that the soils are alluvium derived from acid shale and sandstone. Subsequently, this is a leaner wine evoking images of première cru Chablis.

2005 vintage tasting notes:
TBA - release scheduled for fall 2007

2004 vintage tasting notes:
Opaque golden straw color. Aromas of lemon peel, minerals, tropical & stone fruit. Near perfect balance of rich full body, lean minerality and  focused fruit flavors continue from the palate through the finish.

Mon Favori Nordique
Mon Favori Nordique translated from French is “My Northern Favorite.” This Chardonnay is made from grapes sourced from the Durell Vineyard, host to both Dijon and Wente clones.  Durell, located in the Sonoma Valley AVA, is arguably one of California’s finest Chardonnay vineyards and this wine pays tribute to everything great California chardonnay can deliver.

2005 vintage tasting notes:
Golden straw in color with a nose that is luscious, complex and leesy with an underlying minerality. A rich, round mouthfeel with hints of butterscotch and caramel coated apples is capped off with a deliciously long finish.

2004 vintage tasting notes:
Brilliant golden color. Nose of candied tropical fruit, banana and caramel. Rich flavors of lees and hazelnut with a voluptuous feel on the palate that continues in the extremely long finish.

Le Vagabond
History tells us that Pinot Noir has been, for winemakers and wine drinkers alike, an elusive varietal, often breathtakingly beautiful and yet just as easily confounding. It is clear that several centuries of discovery in Burgundy has led to the greatest expression of Pinot Noir, yet it seems that almost every year someone – usually in a marketing press release – declares this AVA or that microclimate the “new Burgundy”. While enthusiastically supporting efforts to uncover and develop these promising growing regions, we feel there is still a great deal to be learned.  Therefore, Le Vagabond hits the road, so to speak, beginning our search for what California Pinot Noir has to offer.

2005 vintage tasting notes:
With Pinot Noir fruit sourced from the Santa Rita Hills, Le Vagabond makes a bold debut. This youthful Pinot Noir is an exciting addition to the Sans Permis family of wines. Classic ruby red color, beautiful aromas of bing cherries and strawberry preserves, and a rich texture combine to reflect much of the potential found in this highly regarded central coast AVA.

The Drifter
While still produced and bottled by Sans Permis, The Drifter is a departure from our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir focused wines – and to signify that, we’ve even created a unique label for The Drifter.  Simply put, we love many different types of wine and as the opportunities present themselves we want to try our hand at different varietals.  The goal is to create fun, easy drinking yet interesting wines, and make them available first to our direct mail customers.

Vin Rouge 2005 vintage tasting notes:
This red blend, a classic Cotes du Rhone marriage of Grenache and Syrah, is both fun and complex. Syrah was sourced from Santa Barbara County with Grenache coming from both Santa Barbara County and the often under appreciated winegrowing region of Lodi. On the nose there are hints of chocolate, toasted almonds, and brambly fruit. Medium bodied with a firm structure, The Drifter Vin Rouge is easy drinking and always inviting.

Vin Blanc 2005 vintage tasting notes:
Another classic Rhone varietal makes up the debut vintage of The Drifter Vin Blanc. Grenache Blanc, sourced from cool coastal climates in Santa Barbara County, delivers a fruit driven wine that is ideal for everyday food pairings. Subtle aromas of apple and pear compliment the nicely integrated oak vanilla and spice. The finish is crisp and clean and makes you want another taste.
